"In all the world, the name of Ender is one to conjure with. The child-god, the miracle worker, with life and death in his hands. Every petty tyrant-to-be would like to have the boy, to set him in front of an army and watch the world either flock to join or cower in fear." - Colonel Graff (Card 307).

Summary

Ender's Game is a novel about the future. The main character is Andrew Wiggin also known as Ender. Ender is a third child that is chosen to go to Battle School. He has to leave everything on Earth behind to go to this school in space. He is in training to become apart of the International Fleet so that he can save the world from aliens called buggars. During Battle School, Ender has to learn new skills by fighting teams in the battleroom. Ender excells in his battles and becomes the youngest commander ever at the battle school. He is given a group of students at the school and has to teach them how to fight. Ender and his team fight many challenging battles and win every single one of them. This leads to Ender being transfered to Command School. Here Ender plays simulated battle games where he is the commander of his own fleet and he has to fight buggars. Ender wins all of the battle games and he defeats the buggars. Then he finds out that he wasn't playing a game and that all of those battles were real. Ender had saved the world from the buggars but he was heartbroken. He regretted all of it and could only think of himself as a killer. After all of this Ender goes with his sister to the planets that were once occupied by the buggers. He finds a queen larva of a buggar and can see that the aliens meant no harm. Ender lets the larva live and decides that he has to find a new home for the future buggars.

Outstanding?

Ender's Game was definitaly an outstanding book and that's why it is on the Outstanding Books for the College Bound list. It has a great theme that makes it outstanding. That theme is compassion. Ender had a lot of compassion, so much that he had to play a game to be able to kill. He could not have defeated the buggars if he knew he was going to kill off an entire species. Ender's compassion is clearly seen at the end of the book when he finds the queen larva of the buggars. Ender said "'I'll carry you. I'll go from world to world until I find a time and place where you can come awake in safety. And I'll tell your story to my people, so that perhaps in time they can forgive you, too. The way that you've forgiven me'" (Card 321). He felt so bad about killing the the buggars that he made it his mission to find a new home for future buggars. His compassion helps the reader feel what he is going through which makes the book outstanding.

Favorite Quote

My favorite quote from the book is said by Mazer Rackham, a student at Battle School. "'No one but the enemy will tell you what the enemy is going to do. No one but the enemy will ever teach you how to destroy and conquer. Only the enemy shows you where you are weak. Only the enemy tells you where he is strong. And the rules of the game are what you can do to him and what you can stop him from doing to you'" (Card 262-263). This is told to Ender and it helps him understand his enemies. It is a quote that applies to more than just the game and it true about all enemies. I like this quote because it can help you understand how Ender has to think in order to defeat the buggars.

Recommendation

I would reccomend this book to everyone. Usually I won't even touch a sience fiction book but Ender's Game is different. It is about the future and it is very interesting to see what the author thinks about the future. I liked it because it was a page-turner and it was hard to put down. It was fun to imagine what it would be like to be Ender with all the things he had to go through. The book also has many battle scenes that make it exciting. Overall, I would give this book a 9 out of 10 and recommend it to all readers.
